Tuesday May 21, 2019 7:15 pm – 9 pm Room 214 A in the San Antonio Convention Center. It is on the Meeting Room level of the convention center. This year we are focusing on how much petroleum comes from come from outside the landing zone / reservoir (and the implications for inventory, spacing, etc.). The first three talks address this issue as well as the problems associated with geochemical techniques that attempt to quantify out-of-zone flow. Alton Brown will follow with a talk that builds on last year’s conversation about pressure generation during petroleum generation and explusion.

Call it an exploration recovery. Call it a rebound. But it feels like the oil and gas industry is returning to health in fits and starts. That could be because the patient was sicker than we realize. Any measure of how far exploration has come back should take into consideration how far back it started.

Hydraulic fracturing and earthquakes, volcanoes and climate change. Hardly a day goes by without geological issues of some kind or another making the news. The pervasiveness of social media makes members of the public more likely than ever to voice their opinion about these topics and to share information that may or may not be accurate. So what is a geoscientist’s role in this increasingly connected society? Who is responsible for answering tough questions about the energy sector’s impact on the environment? Iain Stewart is an expert on these questions.

When I chose sustainable development as one of the themes when I stood for AAPG president-elect in 2016, it was to define the role of petroleum geoscience in the energy transition. This highly visible and unified message by petroleum companies underscores the importance of our industry’s role in providing accessible, affordable and reliable energy.

I keep this phrase posted on my workstation. It is a constant reminder that optimism is one of the greatest skills we can possess as petroleum geologists. Optimism toward our future, our prospects, our companies and ourselves is a key to success in our careers as professional geologists.
