When 3-D seismic technology became a must-have tool for the E&P crowd beginning in the mid-1990s, there was considerable scurrying to get up to speed on this then-daunting high-tech application. Even today, it’s not uncommon to see a non-geophysicist’s eyes glaze over when a discussion turns to even basic seismic terminology like P-waves, which move through both solid rock and fluids, and S-waves, which travel only through rock.

Record Number of Abstracts Submitted for URTeC 2015

The Technical Program Committee for the 2015 Unconventional Resources Technology Conference (URTeC), has announced a record number of abstracts submitted for the event set for 20-22 July in San Antonio, Texas. URTeC, the industry’s leading multidisciplinary unconventional conference, is a joint venture between SPE, AAPG and SEG.

Combined Approach Used to Tackle Fracture Monitoring

After many months of harnessing mind-bending ideas, a Houston-based team of engineers, geologists and geophysicists has developed technology to monitor hydraulic fractures from the surface and wellbore simultaneously. Adding multiple dimensions to the monitoring process, they say, allows operators to more clearly understand drainage patterns of hydrocarbons in shale reservoirs and, more importantly, know with greater certainty where to drill the next well, how to optimize completions and maximize asset value.
