Visitors are traveling far to view the tar-saturated, submarine channel or slope gully deposits at Gaviota Beach near Santa Barbara, Calif., where they see a history of bathyal hemipelagic sediment deposition, burial, diagenesis to chert and dolomite, tectonic uplift to above sea level, erosion, transport and redeposition at bathyal depths all during deposition of the middle to upper Miocene Monterey Formation. In other words, besides providing a fun day at the beach, the outcrops offer some important clues to the complex formation that is
