Georgetown – The American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the world's premier professional association for explorationists, will kick off its Geoscience Technology Workshop (GTW) today at the Marriott Hotel.
Taking place November 6-8th, under the theme "Deepwater Exploration of the Columbus & Guiana Basins", GTW Guyana 2017 will bring together the oil and gas industry's top business leaders, academics and technical professionals from 17 countries across Europe and the Americas.
Completely sold-out, with over 170 registered participants, GTW Guyana 2017 will feature thought- provoking keynotes and offer a platform for engaging sessions that will reflect on original ideas, theories and models and thoroughly evaluate the results of the recent exploration campaigns within the Columbus & Guiana Basins. And what a better place for industry leaders to converge, than in Guyana, the new deep water mecca of the region.
"We at AAPG are very excited about holding our first-ever event in Guyana," said Emily Smith Llinás, AAPG's Programs Manager for the Latin America and Caribbean Region. "The country's onshore and offshore potential is drawing interest from operators and service companies currently working in Guyana, as well as others who are considering coming to the area."
Llinás said she hopes the workshop will give those in attendance an opportunity to share best practices and lessons learned.
"We look forward to seeing professionals from the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission sit alongside representatives from ExxonMobil, Total, Repsol and others, sharing information and building relationships. There is no substitute for face-to-face discussion and interaction."
Llinás added that the AAPG hopes to provide benefits to the Guyanese community that will outlast the workshop. In this vain, the organizers provided free or deeply discounted registration to government employees and University of Guyana students.
Additionally, as a part of the workshop, the AAPG is organizing a book drive to collect textbooksand resources for the university's geological engineering program.
"Part of AAPG's core mission is equipping current and future leaders to develop the industry in an efficient and sustainable manner," she said." We hope to do just that through our support of students and professionals in Guyana."
