• 11400 Outcrop-Based Reservoir Models: Fieldwork-derived numerical laboratories to constrain and mitigate subsurface uncertainty Reservoir characterization is an exercise in constraining uncertainty that arises from sparse sampling of the subsurface by widely spaced wells at lengthscales below seismic resolution. Outcrop analogs are an invaluable complement to well and seismic data in this context, because they provide qualitative concepts and quantitative spatial data to guide interpretations of lithology distribution in inter-well volumes. However, analog-driven interpretations of reservoir architecture are not straightforward to compare with dynamic data that describe fluid flow during production – the acid test of any interpretation of reservoir geology. The value of outcrop reservoir analogs is most fully realized when they are used to construct outcrop-based reservoir models that enable explicit predictions of flow patterns in a form that can be compared with routine reservoir-monitoring data. • 11401 Re-interpretation of Sea-Level-Driven Stratigraphic Architectures as the Product of Autogenic Behaviors and Variations in Sediment Flux Over the last two decades, numerical and physical experiments have repeatedly generated insights that contradict the sequence stratigraphic model that is near-universally used to interpret ancient strata in terms of relative changes in sea-level. This presentation will re-examine Upper Cretaceous strata (Blackhawk Formation, Castlegate Sandstone, Mancos Shale) exposed in the Book Cliffs, east-central Utah, USA, which are widely used as an archtype for the sequence stratigraphy of marginal-marine and shallow-marine strata. Stratigraphic architectures in these strata are classically interpreted to reflect forcing by relative sea level, but key aspects can instead be attributed to autogenic behaviors and variations in sediment flux.
