Depositional environment and source rock quality of the Woodbine and Eagle Ford Groups, southern East Texas (Brazos) Basin: An integrated geochemical, sequence stratigraphic, and petrographic approach

In Brazos Basin mudstones, signiﬁcant chemical heterogeneities occur. Several key elements—Ca, Si, Mo, Mn, and Ni—were correlated to depositional conditions and used to determine chemofacies groups based on organic matter richness, mineralogy, and environmental conditions of deposition.

The Heat Beneath Our Feet

On the island of Nevis in the Caribbean, its 11,000 residents are on the verge of an energy transformation. In about two years, their cost of electricity will no longer fluctuate with market prices, and not even a hurricane will stop it from flowing. In fact, over a 25-year period, residents will save an estimated $100 million in energy costs, based on today’s pricing. How is this possible? It is the result of a strategic conversion to geothermal energy developed by GeoFrame Energy, a newly created partnership between Schlumberger New Energy, AAPG Member Bruce Cutright and business partner Dan Pfeffer. Their goal is to make geothermal energy the most cost-effective and reliable means for providing clean, sustainable power.

A Renewed Look at the Anadarko Basin

'Molly Turko, even in these dark times of COVID and decreased worldwide energy demand, is at heart an optimist. “There is always a light, you just have to know where to look,” she said. And she feels that the Anadarko Basin, a place she has spent the last 10 years of her professional life, is a great place to start looking. For Turko, who has worked in multiple basins in the United States, including the Ardmore, Powder River, Appalachian, onshore Gulf Coast and Rocky Mountain basins, said the Anadarko, along with the adjacent Wichita Uplift, may hold the most attractive possibilities.

Remembering John Haun, Father of the AAPG Explorer

John D. Haun, AAPG past president and Sidney Powers Memorial Award recipient, died peacefully on Aug. 8, 2020 at his home in Evergreen, Colo. John was 99 years old, alert and cheerful to the end. His contributions to the monthly activities of AAPG cannot be understated. In fact, you are reading this article in the EXPLORER because of John.

Join the Petroleum Systems Technical Interest Group (TIG) for the next session of the AAPG Petroleum Systems Webinar Series, "Basin Modeling of Thermicity and Diachronism of South Atlantic Rifted Margin: An Example from the Presalt of Brazil", on Wednesday, 4 May 2022, 8:00 AM (CST). Rifted margins contain prolific petroleum systems due to their unique crustal evolution, which frequently causes very favorable combinations of source rock deposition, heat flow evolution, and structural/stratigraphic trap configuration. Structural restoration and basin modeling help understand observed geometries and thermal data, suggesting a strong diachronism between heat flow and structuring/faulting. These concepts and their implications are highlighted with an example from the pre-salt basins in offshore Brazil.
