University of Malaya AAPG Student Chapter goes on field trip to Miri

University of Malaya AAPG SC organized the first ever field trip, entitled ‘Uncover the Beauty of Miri’ on 17 - 19 November 2017. Ten Undergrads took part, two of whom were on the AAPG Student Chapter committee - Shakirah Hazlan as the Project Director & Nor Fatihah Salim as the Vice Director. The participants were selected based on their outstanding academic performance by our instructor, Dr. Meor Hakif Amir Hassan.

'Sowing the Oil': A Little-Known Venezuelan Oil-Industry Initiative

Since the ‘40s, the stated objective of the Venezuelan government was to use oil revenues to diversify the economy and reduce poverty. The opposite occurred, which set the stage for the so-called “Bolivarian Revolution” in the late 1990s, the principal achievement of which was to reduce income disparities by making everyone equally poor. In contrast, a rather unique socioeconomic development emerged within the oil industry itself during the 1980s.

Interactions Between Ice Sheets and Relative Sea Levels: Lessons From Antarctica and NW Scotland

Local sea-level changes are not simply a function of global ocean volumes but also the interactions between the solid Earth, the Earth’s gravitational field and the loading and unloading of ice sheets. Contrasting behaviors between Antarctica and Scotland highlight how important the geologic structure beneath the former ice sheets is in determining the interactions between ice sheets and relative sea levels.

The Role of Carbon Capture in Meeting Net-Zero Carbon Goals

President Biden has laid out a bold and ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions in the United States by 2050. The pathway to that target includes cutting total greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030 and eliminating them entirely from the nation’s electricity sector by 2035. The Office of Fossil Energy and Carbon Management will play an important role in the transition to net-zero carbon emissions by reducing the environmental impacts of fossil energy production and use – and helping decarbonize other hard-to abate sectors.
