American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG)

Here are areas of often-overlooked opportunities that could be a perfect fit for the small independent or new team of independent geoscientists / engineers / landmen / petroleum accountants.  This article, which is excerpted from a larger study, is not intended to be all-inclusive, but is a starting point.

There are areas in the continental U.S. where the small independent oil and gas producer can buy production, put together a revitalization / workover plan, assist in productive divestitures, and conduct in-field drilling. Specifically, individuals and teams can do the following:

  • Revitalizing reservoirs in mature fields
  • Hitting sweet spots in shale plays
  • Buying minerals in plays you know and love
  • Drilling low-risk developmental plays
  • Buying and reworking old wells / mature fields
  • Developing bold, visionary plays while prices are low
